The History

A hill, a heritage, a name a century old.

The name Bukit Timah comes from Malay — bukit, meaning hill, paired with a likely corruption of temak, the tree once common across its slopes. By the mid-19th century the lower reaches were planted with gambier, pepper, nutmeg and later rubber, and in 1898 a gutta-percha plantation took root on the hillsides. Rising 163.6 metres, Bukit Timah Hill remains the highest natural point in Singapore.

Tanglin and Holland Road grew as enclaves for the colonial European community. Holland Village — named after early resident Hugh Holland — began as a settlement for British military families before becoming the bohemian quarter known today. The district's institutions tell a story of permanence: Nanyang Girls' High (1917) and the schools that became Hwa Chong Institution have anchored Bukit Timah's name in education for over a century.

What's Changing

Evolving without losing its character.

One Holland Village Residences — Far East Organization's integrated development of homes, retail and community space — completed in 2024, bringing 296 residences and a refreshed village heart to the precinct.

The most significant change is still unfolding at Bukit Timah Turf City. Under URA's Master Plan 2025, the former turf club is being transformed into a new residential estate of an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 public and private homes —the first public housing in Bukit Timah in nearly four decades. The plan conserves 22 heritage buildings, including the Grandstand and stable blocks, and is built around a car-lite, green-corridor lifestyle linked to the upcoming Cross Island Line. Together with the Circle Line at Holland Village and the Downtown Line along Bukit Timah Road, connectivity here deepens year on year.

Why Live Here

Four reasons District 10 endures.

Heritage greenery

At its centre sits the Singapore Botanic Gardens — the nation's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2015, and the only tropical botanic garden on the list. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve adds primary rainforest minutes from the city.

Schools that define a generation

Nanyang Girls' High, Hwa Chong Institution, National Junior College and Raffles cluster here, making D10 one of the most sought-after education catchments in Singapore.

Landed prestige

Bukit Timah and Holland hold some of the island's most exclusive Good Class Bungalow enclaves — a benchmark for landed ownership in the Core Central Region.

Connected village living

Holland Village's cafes, galleries and Circle Line station sit alongside the Downtown Line and major expressways — pairing leafy calm with direct access to the city.
