Defining Landmark The Rail Corridor

The History

Life along the road to the highest hill.

This central-west district grew up along Upper Bukit Timah Road, the old artery running from town toward the highest hill in Singapore. Its best-known name, Beauty World, comes from the Beauty World Market — a bustling amusement park and market that drew crowds here from the 1940s.

For decades the area was defined by its proximity to nature: the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the old Jurong-line railway, and the low-rise residential estates of Clementi Park, Pandan Valley and Ulu Pandan that grew quietly among the greenery. The closure of the Malayan railway in 2011 left behind a remarkable legacy — a continuous strip of disused track that would be reborn as one of Singapore's most distinctive green spaces.

What's Changing

A green corridor and a renewed Beauty World.

District 21's defining recent project is the renewal of the Rail Corridor. The former KTM railway line through Upper Bukit Timah has been restored by NParks into a continuous green trail, its conserved truss bridges and the heritage Bukit Timah Railway Station reopened as a recreational and historical spine running the length of the district.

At Beauty World, a new chapter is taking shape: mixed-use developments have risen around the Downtown Line station, and the upcoming Beauty World Integrated Transport Hub — an air-conditioned bus interchange linked directly to the MRT, due to open later this decade — will knit the precinct together. With the future Cross Island Line set to serve King Albert Park, this leafy district is steadily gaining the connectivity to match its greenery.
