The History
Heartland towns wrapped in greenery.
Ang Mo Kio — said to mean "red-haired man's bridge" in Hokkien — was developed in the 1970s into one of Singapore's earliest and largest HDB towns, its neighbourhoods laid out as a template for heartland planning. Bishan, built in the 1980s on the site of a former cemetery, took its name from the Peck San Theng burial grounds that once occupied the land, and grew into a sought-after central town with strong schools.
Running between and around them, the Kallang River and the green corridor of Thomson shaped the district's leafy character. Together the two towns came to represent the mature, well-served heartland at the centre-north of the island, equally prized for their amenities, their schools and their access to nature.
What's Changing
A new Lentor township, a greener river.
District 20's most visible recent change is the rise of Lentor. Around the new Lentor MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line, a cluster of government land sites has been transformed into an entirely new residential township, with a series of condominium launches since 2022 drawing strong demand. The Thomson-East Coast Line itself has reshaped the district, linking Upper Thomson, Bright Hill, Lentor and the mature towns directly to Orchard, Marina Bay and beyond.
Earlier, the celebrated restoration of the Kallang River through Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park — turning a concrete canal into a naturalised, meandering river within one of Singapore's largest parks — set a benchmark for greening the city. The result is a district that pairs decades of heartland maturity with a wave of new homes and connections.
