The History
A heartland wrapped in green.
District 23 grew up on the hilly western fringe of Singapore's central catchment. Choa Chu Kang carries one of the island's oldest names, from the "kangchu" system of river-based plantations — its first headman gave the area his clan name — when gambier and pepper were grown along the river and tigers still roamed the early-19th-century jungle.
Bukit Panjang, "long hill," began as a village before its redevelopment into a modern HDB town. Hillview took a different path, growing into an upmarket private enclave tucked among the army camps and greenery of the west. Through it all, the district's defining feature has been nature: it sits right beside the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Dairy Farm and the central forests, a heartland wrapped in green.
What's Changing
Greener, and finally linked to the city.
District 23's biggest shift in recent years has been connectivity and nature. The Downtown Line, extended to Bukit Panjang, Hillview, Cashew and Beauty World, finally gave the western enclaves a direct rail link to the city, and the Bukit Panjang Integrated Transport Hub knitted the MRT, LRT and bus interchange together with a mall above.
Alongside, the area's green assets have been steadily enhanced: Dairy Farm Nature Park, with its scenic Singapore Quarry and Wallace Trail, the restored Rail Corridor, and the wider Bukit Timah and central catchment reserves give residents some of the most accessible nature in Singapore. New private condominiums around Hillview and Dairy Farm have drawn buyers seeking that rare mix of greenery and a city-linked address.
