The History
The cultural heart of Malay Singapore.
Geylang Serai is one of the oldest settlements to spread out from old Singapore Town. Its name recalls the lemongrass (serai) and citronella once farmed here, alongside rice and coconut, before rising rents in town through the 1920s and 1930s pushed families out to settle the area. Over time it became the cultural heart of Singapore's Malay community, a role it still holds through the Geylang Serai market and Wisma Geylang Serai civic centre.
Paya Lebar — "wide swamp" in Malay — began as low-lying land of poultry and pig farms before being remade into a commercial and transport node. Together with Eunos and Kembangan, the district carries a layered history of farms, kampongs and shophouses now wrapped around a busy modern MRT interchange.
What's Changing
A new commercial gateway to the east.
District 14's biggest shift is the rise of Paya Lebar Central, the URA-planned commercial hub anchoring the eastern gateway to the city. Its centrepiece, Paya Lebar Quarter, completed in 2019 as an integrated development of offices, a retail mall and homes beside the Paya Lebar MRT interchange, bringing a new working population and street life to the area.
Nearby, Wisma Geylang Serai opened as a civic and community hub celebrating Malay heritage, while river and park improvements have greened the Geylang corridor. Looking further ahead, the planned long-term relocation of Paya Lebar Air Base will eventually free a large tract of land for a major new town — positioning District 14 beside one of the island's most significant future redevelopment sites.
