The History
An old coastal name, a giant heartland town.
Bedok is one of Singapore's oldest recorded place names, appearing on the island's first detailed map in 1828 and taking its name from Sungai Bedok, a river in the present Tanah Merah area. For generations a coastal district of fishing and farming kampongs, it was transformed from 1973 into Bedok New Town — the fifth HDB town and today one of the largest, home to around 200,000 residents.
Land reclamation pushed the shoreline outward to create the East Coast and its park, while the higher ground of Upper East Coast, Siglap and Frankel grew into sought-after landed enclaves. The district has long balanced two characters at once: dense, well-served public housing alongside quiet private estates, all within reach of the sea.
What's Changing
A new coastal chapter at Bayshore.
District 16's headline project is Bayshore. In October 2023, HDB unveiled the masterplan for this 60-hectare estate on reclaimed land beside the sea, planned to deliver around 10,000 new homes — roughly 70 percent of them public housing — as a coastal extension of Bedok town. The new precinct is served by the Bayshore and Bedok South stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line, which has sharpened connectivity across the whole district.
Around it, mature Bedok continues to renew through upgrading and new amenities, while the landed enclaves of Upper East Coast remain among the east's most settled addresses. Few eastern districts pair this much existing convenience with so substantial a new coastal chapter.
Why Live Here
Four reasons District 16 endures.
A complete heartland town
Bedok offers some of the east's deepest amenities: hawker centres, malls, markets, schools and parks all within reach.
Coast and greenery
East Coast Park, the beach and the Bedok Jetty give the district an outdoor, seaside rhythm.
Landed and private enclaves
Upper East Coast, Siglap and Frankel hold quiet, leafy estates prized by east-side families.
A new seaside estate
The upcoming Bayshore precinct adds thousands of new homes and fresh amenities along the coast.
