The History
The seat of government, beside the river of trade.
District 6 is the smallest of Singapore's postal districts and, arguably, its most historic. This is the Civic District: the seat of colonial and then national government, where the former City Hall and Supreme Court — now joined as the National Gallery Singapore — witnessed the Japanese surrender in 1945 and the birth of self-government and independence.
Along the river, Clarke Quay tells the commercial side of the story. From the early 1800s its banks were lined with godowns and bumboats loading cargo for the warehouses of the Singapore River, the artery of the colony's trade. As port activity moved to Keppel and the river was cleaned up in the 1980s, the quay was gazetted for conservation in 1989 and reinvented as a riverside destination — history preserved, then given new life.
What's Changing
A riverside quarter reborn for day and night.
The district's most recent chapter is the rejuvenation of Clarke Quay. An extensive asset-enhancement programme that began in 2022 culminated in the reopening of CQ @ Clarke Quay on 26 April 2024, broadening the precinct from a nightlife strip into an all-day riverside destination. Seven historic warehouses were restored — their godown form and heritage jack-roofs kept, with glass skylights drawing in daylight — and the precinct now holds around sixty dining, retail and lifestyle concepts across three zones along the water.
Anchoring the cultural end of the district, the National Gallery Singapore — opened in the conserved City Hall and former Supreme Court in 2015 — has cemented the Civic District as the country's art and heritage core. Few places in Singapore pack as much history, culture and riverfront life into so compact an area.
