The History
From fruit orchards to the famous mile.
Orchard Road takes its name literally. In the 19th century this was farmland — nutmeg, pepper and fruit orchards stretching from the edge of town. A blight swept the nutmeg plantations, and Cairnhill, once Charles Carnie's nutmeg estate, was among the first to be subdivided into a residential hill.
By the post-war decades Orchard had become Singapore's premier shopping street: the 1970s brought landmark openings such as C.K. Tang's, Plaza Singapura and the Mandarin Hotel that set its retail identity. Around the spine, River Valley and Killiney grew into dense, sought-after residential pockets, their closeness to town making them some of the earliest prime addresses in Singapore. The orchards are long gone, but the name — and the prestige — endured.
What's Changing
The island's largest precinct rejuvenation.
District 9 is the focus of Singapore's biggest precinct revamp. The Orchard Road rejuvenation is a coordinated effort by the URA, Singapore Tourism Board and National Parks Board to reposition the belt with wider pedestrian malls, shaded green links and new public spaces, including the Grange Road event venue and a greener, more walkable street.
Older buildings along the periphery are being redeveloped under URA incentives, while landmark sites are remade. At the River Valley end, CanningHill Piers — the integrated redevelopment of the former Liang Court with 700 homes, a hotel and serviced residences beside Fort Canning MRT — has been completing from 2024. Together these works re-rate the micro-locations around Cairnhill, River Valley and Killiney, deepening their appeal for owner-occupiers and the long-hold rental market alike.
