The History
From coastal people to colonial airfield.
Seletar takes its name from the Orang Seletar, the aboriginal coastal people who once lived along the Seletar River and the Johor Strait before it was dammed to form the Lower Seletar Reservoir. The district's defining chapter is aviation: construction of the Seletar Air Base began in 1927 and finished in 1929, and through the 1930s it served early international airlines such as Imperial Airways before becoming a Royal Air Force base. That legacy survives in the cluster of black-and-white colonial bungalows that still line the Seletar streets.
Yio Chu Kang, to the south, was a major gambier and pepper plantation area in the 19th century before settling into the quiet residential and landed character that defines the district today.
What's Changing
A high-tech future, a heritage kept.
District 28's modern transformation centres on the Seletar Aerospace Park, a 140-hectare precinct built to anchor Singapore's aerospace industry, drawing aircraft maintenance, repair and assembly firms around the upgraded Seletar Airport. Rather than erase the area's history, the development has conserved and restored its heritage black-and-white houses, now home to restaurants and businesses in a leafy setting known as The Oval.
Around the reservoir, Lower Seletar Reservoir Park and Rower's Bay have added waterfront recreation, while the Seletar Hills and Jalan Kayu landed estates remain among the calmest, most spacious addresses in the north. The result is a district that has built a high-tech future without losing its quiet, historic charm.
