The History
From the island's western edge to a campus city.
The name Buona Vista — "good view" in Italian — comes from the elevated ground here, and North Buona Vista Road was formally named in 1972. For most of the 20th century this was the western edge of the island: Pasir Panjang's coast, plantations and, later, the campuses that would define the area.
The opening of the National University of Singapore at Kent Ridge and the growth of Clementi New Town turned District 5 into one of Singapore's great education and research belts, stretching from Clementi through Buona Vista. That academic gravity set the stage for one-north, the planned research district that rose around the universities — making this corner of the west less a suburb than a campus city, where living, learning and discovery sit side by side.
What's Changing
A research district that now lives in.
one-north remains the district's engine. Developed by JTC around Biopolis and Fusionopolis, it has grown into Singapore's leading R&D hub for biomedical sciences, infocomm and media — and it keeps densifying, now with homes woven in. Recent condominium launches such as Blossoms by the Park (2023) and The Hill @ One-North (2024) bring residents into the research quarter itself.
Nearby, the Cross Island Line's second phase adds new Clementi and West Coast stations, with construction underway from 2024, deepening already strong connectivity. Around them, Clementi's mature town and the West Coast's settled estates continue to be refreshed with new housing and amenities. The result is a district evolving on two tracks at once — a global innovation cluster layered over one of Singapore's most established residential and education catchments.
Why Live Here
Four reasons District 5 draws people in.
The heart of research and learning
NUS, one-north, Biopolis and Fusionopolis make this Singapore's densest cluster of universities and R&D.
Schools for every stage
From NUS High and strong primary schools to Ngee Ann and Singapore Polytechnic, the education catchment is among the island's best.
Settled, green and well-served
Clementi and West Coast offer mature estates, parks and neighbourhood amenities with a relaxed western-suburb feel.
Strengthening connections
Existing MRT plus the new Cross Island Line stations are widening access across the island.
