The History
From Singapore's workshop to a regional hub.
Jurong was, for most of the 20th century, mangrove, swamp and farmland at the island's western edge — until it was chosen, from the 1960s, to become Singapore's first major industrial estate, the engine of the young nation's manufacturing. Around the factories, the new towns of Jurong, Boon Lay and Taman Jurong rose to house their workers, and the Jurong Lake area was landscaped with the Chinese and Japanese Gardens and their distinctive pagodas.
Over the decades the heavy industry moved west to Tuas, and Jurong East matured into a regional centre — a cluster of malls, offices and the western terminus of the rail network. What began as Singapore's workshop has steadily become one of its most complete heartland hubs.
What's Changing

District 22 is the site of Singapore's most ambitious decentralisation: the Jurong Lake District, planned as the country's second Central Business District. At around 410 hectares it will be larger than Marina Bay, and the URA has begun releasing land to anchor its transformation into a major business and mixed-use node, with estimates of thousands of new homes and over a million square feet of office space in its first phase alone.
At its heart, Jurong Lake Gardens — Singapore's third national garden — has reopened the lakeside as public parkland, soon to be joined by a new Science Centre. With the Cross Island Line and Jurong Region Line adding to the existing interchange, the west is being remade around this district.
